How Kentucky Cutting Boards began…

The idea for these unique cheese, cutting and bread boards actually began in a casual discussion over a glass of wine in our backyard in the Fall of 2006.

In 1995, my husband Bill launched his flooring manufacturing company, Custom Hardwood Supply .    By 2003 a big portion of his business was flooring inlays and medallions created from beautiful hardwoods. Customers came in to the showroom because they desired the warmth that natural wood provides in their homes and fell in love with the rich colors and unique look of inlays and patterns using gorgeous woods such as Peruvian Walnut and African Lacewood.

We decided it would be really great if we could create a decorative yet functional product utilizing these beautiful woods that could be enjoyed by a greater number of people. We ran through a list of items that could incorporate hardwood inlays, and in that list, our cutting board business was born! The product line has since grown to include bread and cheese boards as well as Lazy Susans.

We’ve had a lot of fun deciding which simple yet iconic designs might be suited to inlays.  Once a design is chosen there is the process of figuring out how best to incorporate the most striking features of several wood species to translate our designs into our products in a way that looks both natural and unique.  Our Horse Head was the first design to really become  a hit (naturally, as Louisville is the home of the Kentucky Derby!) with the Fleur de Lis following close behind – another Louisville trademark (as well as in New Orleans). Other popular designs include our Ladybug, especially around Mother’s Day, and the Pineapple which has become a popular gift for Realtors to give as a housewarming gift to new home buyers.  One of our newest boards, the 20 X 6 X 1 Artisan Bread Board, features an owl with glowing Yellow Heart eyes.

We are always looking for interesting design ideas. If you are interested in a custom design, email me and I’ll quote you a price.
